“Poetry is not a Luxury.”

- Audre Lorde

1. Viva Sankofa‍ ‍

(Hybrid Alternative -Haibun )

A “Haibun, is a form that originated in Japan, is a work that combines haiku and prose, wherein the prose poem typically describes an environment and precedes the haiku.” It has three parts.

Part one is a flash story that focuses on travel, memory, or lyrical essay and then leads to an epiphany or deeper meaning about the experience.

My experience was seeing the view of the ocean in The Bahamas. I wrote this poem overlooking a balcony on the cruise ship. I had never seen the ocean in my life and at 23 I felt I truly saw the color blue for the first time in my life. I was sad going home from the trip but what comforted me is knowing the same sun, wind, and taste of citrus can hold me at any time in any part of the world.

I hope Black people and the Black Diaspora can experience the same; freedom no one can take away. Home within the wind.

Despite all.

2. TARO DREAMS: A LOVE POEM.

This captures first time I thought it was the “real thing”; LOVE, that is. This year in 2026. It might have been great chemistry, close intimacy, and a true shared connection, but “love” can feel like ANY of those things especially if you have never had it (romantically at least). Undeniably Intoxicating between two black women. Sex. Love. Chemistry. Safety. It is not all the same. What they have in common is feeling chosen or the act of choosing. until I returned to the person who deserves it most. ME. Cheers to the heartbreaking over and over again

Disclaimer: Poem can be read 4 ways.

Am I dreaming?

When I woke up I saw you first

Hovering over me with soft hands

leaves spread, and I imagined you deep

Like every stroke of green in a Taro.

I saw your beautiful face and I dreamed it rained.

Crusading down my legs first,

Trickles of water collected at my feet

And my clothes became wet satin.

The water has never stopped falling.

I am an infinity pool and you are Bali flowers

Florida water on my forehead,

Together we make land and sea.

I am dreaming again; but I don't hear rain.

Instead I feel you inside like a sun ray among the shadows.

Tsunami water running through buildings

glass bursting from temple windows.

You remind me of water too.

Turquoise under Romanian Canoes

Colorado Springs on my thighs

Cold fingertips twinkling over hot tea.

I thank you for that; like veins hugging a heartbeat

as if the earth titled and the ocean spilled over into my bed

Reaching for my shoulders

Like waves to the shore

as I was caressed I became lathered in you.

In the sea of Earth’s floor Dreaming

Shea Butter Scalp

Coconut Calves

Aloe Vera Insides

I feel you.

For Earth,

For Land,

From, Water
